Rock marks Labor Day
ROCK – The Rock Labor Day Festival was filled with flags, floats and fun Saturday as people came from across the region to participate in the annual event under warm sunny skies.
The end-of-summer tradition commemorated its 70th year with the theme “Remember the 70s.” Members of the Rock Lions Club – sponsor of the community fundraiser – got in the groove with their purple and yellow tie-dye t-shirts.
In the parade, which started at noon this year, first place float honors and a $200 prize went to the Beaver Area 4-H Club which was an antique pickup truck decked out in peace signs and balloons. Rock Bible Chapel’s “Got God?” train earned second place while the Stephens Family Reunion farm float placed third.
Boilermakers Local 169 walked off with first place in the walkers category while Cub Scouts Pack 471 earned second-place honors. Horseback Riders – with riders and horses dressed in hippy attire – received first in the parade’s miscellaneous category. Honorable mention was awarded to the Patriot Guard motorcycle group.
Veterans groups, businesses, rescue units, and model cars and trucks rounded out the parade which was reigned over by Grand Marshal Frank Salmi of Rock. Mid Peninsula School’s Homecoming Queen and King – Kelsie Nummilien and Brett Branstrom – also adorned the lineup.
After the parade, residents and visitors joined the festivities along the midway behind the Lions clubhouse where concessions, bingo, music, games, a bounce house, and a flea market/craft sale were available.
Various contests for all ages and interests took place throughout the day including a horseshoe contest, a kids tractor pull and bingo contest.
First place in the Lions Club’s raffle was a $400 Gander Mountain gift card. The raffle had 29 prizes which included donations from local individuals and organizations, area businesses, and the Lions Club.
The Labor Day festival is the local Lions Club’s major fundraiser of the year with profits going back into the community and other projects supported by the international organization.
