Hazel R. Porath
ESCANABA – Hazel R. Porath, 80, of Escanaba, passed away on Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, at the Bishop Noa Home.
Hazel was born Dec. 19, 1932, in Escanaba, the daughter of Carl and Beulah (Peterson) Larson. She was raised in Escanaba and as an older teen and young adult she lived in Chicago and Omaha, Neb. While in Chicago she took care of her niece and worked for the Salvation Army. While in Omaha she ran a candy store.
She eventually returned to Escanaba and met her husband, Herbert. They were married on July 12, 1954, at the Salvation Army Temple Corps. Hazel was a member of the Salvation Army Temple Corps where she taught Sunday School, was in charge of the Cradle Roll, was a member of the Women’s Home League and volunteered for many years.
Hazel enjoyed having kids around and would often babysit for family and friends. If she knew when your birthday or anniversary was she was sure to remember you with a card. She always had the coffee pot on and loved to cook. There was always enough for whoever stopped by.
Hazel is survived by three daughters, Susan (Bill) Miller of Escanaba, Judy (Charles) Wight of Mt. Carroll, Ill., and Tammy (Jeff) Martin of Escanaba; her son, Stanley (Carla) Porath of Escanaba; 12 grandchildren, Holly (Tom) Brimmer of Hart, Mich., Steven (Lori) Miller of Escanaba, Jonathan (Sara) Miller of Escanaba, Carl Wight of Mt. Carroll, Ill., Christina (John) Swank of Gladstone, Jennifer (Jon) Kennedy of Mt. Carroll, Ill., Jessica (Jim) Sobol of Mt. Carroll, Ill., Tabatha (Marc) Rudebeck of Escanaba, Andrew (Megan) Porath of Escanaba, Lisa (Tom Porior) Brady of Escanaba, Scott Martin of Pontiac, Mich., and David Martin of Escanaba; 20 great grandchildren; two brothers, Glenn (Ruth) Larson of Gladstone and Stanley Larson of Glencoe, Minn.; sister-in-law, Mary Jo Larson of Escanaba and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two great grandsons, Aaron and Ben Rudebeck; three brothers, David, Paul (Shirley) and Clifford Larson; sister, Anna Mae (Robert) Johnson; and sister-in-law, Jan Larson.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, Sept. 5 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Salvation Army Temple Corps Community Center in Escanaba. Funeral services will follow at 6 p.m. with Major Ralph Hansen and Major William Cox officiating. A luncheon will be served following the services in the fellowship hall. Hazel will be laid to rest in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery.
