Jean C. Butryn

BARK RIVER – Jean C. Butryn, 95, former resident of Bark River, passed away on Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at Christian Park Health Care Center in Escanaba.

Jean was born Aug. 10, 1918, in south Bark River to the late Felix and Antonette Barr. She was raised in Bark River and attended public school there.

On Aug. 30, 1935, she married Louis Butryn. Together they made their home north of Schaffer for the next 50 years. After Louis passed away in 1985, Jean moved to Escanaba.

She was a member or OSF Auxiliary, Elks, and Eagles Auxiliary.

Jean was a full time homemaker and a wonderful cook, making the most awesome pierogis, homemade noodles, and pies just for starters.

She was always active and had a great outlook on life, full of fun, and liked to make people laugh.

In her younger years, she enjoyed music, especially polkas played by her husband on the concertina, dancing, bowling, golfing, playing cards, crocheting, crafts, puzzles, and going to the casino. Her biggest love was her family.

Surviving are her sons, Robert (Alice) of Escanaba, Richard (Winnie) of Schaffer; daughters, Janis (late Stan) Knoll of Escanaba and Julie (Gary) Gagne of Powers; 11 grandchildren, Barbie (Craig) VanEnkevort, Brenda (Steve) Webber, Julene (Dan) Buenz, Lori Ann (Jim) Alexander, Cheryl (Steve) Wiersema, Andrew Butryn, Dr. Rob (Jill) Butryn, Sheela Butryn, Anita Butryn, Asha Butryn, Robert (Jan) Butryn; 21 great-grandchildren, Brianne (Matt) Clark, Justin (Meggie) Buenz, Nicklaus, Blake andTaylor Alexander, Paige, Parker and Pierce Wiersema, Noah and Ethan Van Enkevort, Morgan and Alyssa Webber, David and Daniel Butryn, Matthew and Allison Butryn, Adrianne Butryn, Terrance Butryn, Breslin and Isiah Butryn; step-grandchild, B.J.; sister-in-law, Collette (Stanley) Butryn; brother-in-law, Roger (Victoria) Stabbens.; and her cat, Lilly.

Jean is also survived by special nieces, Jean (Meyers) Bachleda of Missouri, Charmaine (Kleiman) Jensen of Arizona, Cindy Kleiman of Lansing, Mich.; along with many other special nieces, nephews, and special friend, Marilyn.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Louis; sisters, Helen (Frank) Meyers, Mary (Ed) Novack, Sophie (Ernest) Kleiman; brothers, Joe (Catherine), John (Anna), Louis (Josie), Frank (Josephine), Ben (Helen), Andy Barr.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Sept. 13, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral in Escanaba. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 6 p.m. at St. Anne’s Church with Rev. Fran DeGroot officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall.

Burial will be held at Bark River Cemetery. The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Butryn family.
