Gladstone couple celebrates 70 years of marriage
GLADSTONE – Lewis and Shirley Ware will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on Sept. 17. Lewis and the former Shirley De Lano were married Sept. 17, 1943, in Florida shortly before Lewis, who was serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, was scheduled to be shipped out to the Pacific Theater.
Upon his discharge from the military, the couple returned to Battle Creek where they lived prior to their marriage, and Lewis worked as an industrial engineer for United Steel and Wire Company until his retirement in 1981. His wife was a homemaker.
The couple moved to the Gladstone area in 2012 and make their home in Westridge Heights.
In his spare time, Lewis enjoys fishing. Shirley is a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Gladstone.
The Wares are the parents of three children, Vivian Lea Ayers of Gladstone, Jeff Ware of Stonington, and the late Bruce Ware. They also have two grandchildren and five great-children.
