Prep tennis: Patriots edge improving Braves
GLADSTONE – The Gladstone Braves are getting closer, but Monday afternoon at the Pfotenhauer Park tennis courts, the Westwood Patriots were too much, earning a hard fought 5-3 victory.
Gladstone took three of four singles matches, showing marked improvement, while the Patriots swept doubles to power their win.
At No. 2 singles, Lauren Parrett came out on top of a grueling three-set match 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 over Courtney Beauchamp. No. 3 Bridget Becker continued what has been a successful season for her, with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Faith LeRoy and No. 1 Gabby Movalson handled Megan Chapman 6-2, 6-3.
“All the singles played well,” said Gladstone coach Rich Trombly. “Gabby played one of her best matches and Bridget and Lauren are solid No. 3 and No. 2 players. They can overpower their opponents at times.”
Gladstone’s No. 3 doubles team of Carly DeVet and Paige Cavadeas took a tough three-set loss to Lacey Pietro and Olivia Deracha 6-2, 0-6, 7-10, while the Braves’ other three doubles teams fell in straight sets.
Gladstone resumes Wednesday, hosting Munising.
