Mildred I. ‘Millie’ Sarasin

DANFORTH – Mildred I. “Millie” Sarasin, 87, formerly of 4702 17th Road, Danforth, Mich., passed away at the Bishop Noa Home on Sept. 17, 2013.

Millie lived with her daughter in Gwinn for five years until she fell and broke her hip. She then had to live at the Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba.

She was born Aug. 9, 1926, in Northland, Mich., the daughter of John and Delia (Dousi) Hurkmans. Millie married Alfred J. “Bud” Sarasin on Sept. 3, 1945, in Escanaba. They lived in Escanaba and Northland throughout their married lives.

She was employed as cook at the Wells Township School in Arnold, Mich., for many years then worked in school kitchens in Escanaba and Cornell until her retirement. She also worked in house cleaning and child care. Before her marriage she worked at Tommy’s Restaurant and The Venus in Escanaba. Millie loved doing crafts, sewing, canning, making things for her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed being with her family, vacation trips, camping and Disney World.

Millie is survived by: three daughters, Joanne (Larry) Peterson of Gladstone, Pamela (Daniel) Keskimaki of Gwinn, Carol (Mark R.) Lippold of Escanaba; five sons, Dale (Mickie Gage) of Gladstone, Daryl (Rose Young) of Cornell, John (Laura Grenier) of Cornell, Jeffrey (Lynn LaFave) of Kalamazoo, Mich., Donald (Karen Oja) of Winter Haven, Fla. Also survived by five sisters, Lucy Helland, Therese Sebeck, Caroline Lynch, Rosemary Lynch and one brother, Tony (Sonja) Hurkmans; daughter-in-law, Paula (Coutler) Sarasin; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Hurkmans, Ellen Hurkmans, Millie Hurkmans, Pat (Chuck) Ustine, Phyllis (Mike) Summers and Nora Sarasin; 21 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband in 2004; son, David, in 2006; five brothers, James, Nick, Bill, Joe and Guy; four sisters, Ann, Marge, Betty and Mary Ann; brothers-in-law, Bill Olson, Ed Lynch, Jack Lynch, Ray Phillips Melvin Sebeck, Ray Sarasin and Bill Helland; and sisters-in-law, Elaine Johnson and RoseMary (Bob) Johnson.

Millie will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was a good mother and always did her best.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, Sept. 22, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Fr. Fran DeGroot officiating. Mildred will be laid to rest in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery.
