Rodger Thomas Murray

ESCANABA – Rodger Thomas Murray, 87, of 1214 S. 15th. St. in Escanaba passed away Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, at Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba. He was born July 28, 1926 in Escanaba and was the son of John D. and Anna (Ryan) Murray.

Rodger graduated from Escanaba High School in 1944 and then attended the University of Notre Dame, Indiana State University and graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in 1947.

After college he worked for Standard Oil, later for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad prior to joining the Michigan State Highway Department in May of 1949. In 1952, he moved to Escanaba and married the former Verna C. Decker on July 26, 1952. Rodger retired from the Michigan State Highway Department as the U.P. Local Government Engineer and Administrator in March of 1982.

He was a member of the St. Anne Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, served as president of the Bay de Noc State Employees Credit Union for 10 years, served on the Holy Cross Cemetery Board and Holy Name School Board, was a former member of the Escanaba Rotary Club, served on the City of Escanaba Planning Commission, was the commanding officer of Navel Reserve Surface Division, 9-202 from November 1951 to November 1955 and served as president of the Douglas Houghton Chapter of Professional Engineers. Rodger enjoyed golfing, biking, walking, cross country skiing and playing bridge.

Rodger Thomas Murray is survived by: wife, Verna; son, Michael (Janine) Murray of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; daughter, JoAnne Murray of Ohio; gandchildren, Zachary, Benjamin and Alexander and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sister Betty and brothers John and Francis.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Anne Catholic Church with Father Fran DeGroot officiating. A luncheon will be served following the funeral mass in the St. Anne Catholic Church fellowship hall. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.
