DeTOUR – Senior quarterback Jake Pearson ran for 331 yards and six touchowns and passed for another score as the Rapid River Rockets rolled to a 48-25 eight-man football triumph over the Cedarville Trojans.
The victory enabled to Rockets to qualify for the state playoffs and improve to 6-0 overall and the Bridge Alliance Conference.
Cedarville (5-1) led 13-0 after the first quarter.
David Hough, however, returned a punt 88 yards to the Cedarville one-yard line in the second stanza and Pearson did the rest to pull the Rockets within 13-8.
“That was huge,” said Rockets’ coach Steve Ostrenga. “We gained a lot of momentum from that. It was like a boxing match because the game went back and forth for a while.”
Pearson completed 4-of-5 passes for 83 yards, including a 55-yard TD to Mike Casey. The Rockets finished with 383 yards rushing.
“Our offensive line blocked very well, and our defense stepped up,” said Ostrenga. “They’re a very fast football team. But our defensive backs Pat Pryal, David Hough, Mike Casey and Josh Parrett and linebackers did a great job. Our defense really came to play in the second, third and fourth quarters. We had good pressure on them. I thought our assistant coaches came up with a real good game plan. I appreciate everything they do.”
The Rockets, who also won the jayvee game 44-28, host Superior Central for homecoming Friday.
“I thought their offensive line also blocked very well,” said Ostrenga. “Plus, Nathan Berglund and our receivers did a great job. That was a real nice win for them.”
