Russell Lawrence Sapino

ESCANABA – Russell Lawrence Sapino, 66, of 615 S. 13th St., Escanaba, passed away on Oct. 13, 2013, at OSF St. Francis Hospital.

He was born on Dec. 12, 1946, in Calumet, the son of Lawrence and Laverna (Purdue) Sapino. Russell graduated from Calumet High School in 1965.

Russell married Mary Gregorich on Sept. 28, 1974, in Calumet.

He was a member of the National Guard and spent time with his father in Detroit during the Riots.

In 1978, he moved to Escanaba.

Russell enjoyed golfing, spending time with his grandson, and cheering on all Michigan sports teams, especially the Lions, Redwings, and the Tigers.

He was a coach for Calumet Area Junior Hockey and the Escanaba Area Junior Hockey Association. Russell was a USA advanced level coach.

He was a member of the Escanaba Country Club, Elks Lodge 354, and St. Anne’s Church.

His survivors include: his wife, Mary, of Escanaba; children, Tracy (Mike) Porter of Lake Linden, Heather (Chad Potvin) Sapino and Crystal Sapino, both of Escanaba, Sean (Kelsey Keilla) Sapino of Waukesha, Wis.; grandchildren, Solei and Gage Porter, Anthony Russell Potvin, affectionally called “Gumba”; siblings, Mario (Karen) Sapino of Hubbell, Lesley Sapino of Toma, Wis., Angela (Rick) Daubman of Sheboygan, Wis., and Lionel (Laura) Sapino of Sheboygan, Wis; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be on Thursday, Oct. 17 from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 6 p.m. at St. Anne’s Church with Rev. Fran DeGroot officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall.
