Escanaba rec programs, civic center have busy year

ESCANABA – An update and overview of Escanaba’s various recreation programs – including park facilities and civic center activities – were presented during the recent Manager’s Call.

Escanaba Recreation Director Tom Penegor gave an update on the facilities and services available through the department including the free after-school programs at the civic center.

Since mid-September, 180 youth have registered for after-school activities at the civic center, said Penegor.

A record year was set last year with more than 600 children and teens registered in different programs, he noted.

In the gym, students can participate in basketball, volleyball, dodge ball, soccer, shuffleboard and bean bag toss.

In the game room, youth can play pool, bumper pool, foosball, ping pong, air hockey, chess, checkers, and card games. They can also participate in homework session and the computer lab and watch a big screen television.

There is also a firing range for archery and pistols in the center’s basement.

Additional recreational programs include adult Zumba, aerobics, women’s volleyball and men’s basketball.

The senior center, also located in the civic center, offers activities for senior citizens including scheduled meals, line dancing, Tai Chi, Wii games, bingo, and card playing. Call 786-8850 for more information.

Penegor also talked about the city’s parks, cross-country ski/hiking trails, ice rinks, and snowshoe rental. He gave an update on the new Besse Park and recent bathroom and locker room renovations at the civic center. These projects were funded through the John and Melissa Besse Foundation.

Penegor said the city has applied for a Recreational Passport Grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for funds to resurface the tennis courts at Ludington Park and to install sidewalks to connect the tennis courts to the parking lot and pavilion.

Penegor noted these are the only lighted tennis courts in the Upper Peninsula.
