Rose Anita Leach

ROCK – Rose Anita Leach, of 2916 Lathrop Lane, Rock, passed away Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013, at St Francis Hospital in Escanaba.

Rose was born March 25, 1927, in Lathrop, Mich., the daughter of Frank and Martha (Johnson) Johnson. She was a graduate of Rock High School class of 1945. On Feb. 8, 1947, she married Fred H Leach in Gladstone, Mich. Community involvement included 4-H leader, Bible school teacher, foster grandparent and proudly carrying the American flag for the Rock Auxiliary Post 559.

Her working years began as a telephone operator shortly after graduation in Chicago, Ill. She retired at the age of 79 as a motel desk clerk in Gwinn, Mich. Most of her employed years, as in daily life, involved taking care of people, their needs and comfort. Most rewarding being time spent at Bay Cliff Health Camp.

The greatest pleasures for Rose were the people in her life, whether family, friends or perfect strangers. But especially grandchildren, (anyone’s)! She enjoyed keeping up with what was going on in the “young” peoples lives, the news and what “Carl” had to say regarding the weather.

Knitting, crocheting and the daily crossword puzzles were her recent hobbies, along with being the perfect hostess to who ever graced her doorway. Rose was always willing to lend an ear, offer comfort, advice, sharing Lathrop history, and being the “Encourager.” She was known for leaving her porch light on in case a passing motorist needed assistance…the light in the distance. She devoted herself in caring for her husband Fred right up to her very last. She is loved and will be missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her husband Fred, survivors include Karen (Curt) Way of Lakeworth, Fla., Raymond (Linda) Leach of Escanaba, Mich., Sue Schwan, Kinross, Mich., Marlene (Larry) Clausen of McFarland, Mich., nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, sister-in-law Judy Johnson of Rock, special cousin Laverne Koski of Rock, many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, three brothers, Henry, Gordon, Paul; three sisters, Helen Johnson, Mona Johnson, Dorothy Ontto; and granddaughter Rhonda (Koivula) DeRoche preceded her in death.

Visitation will be Sunday, Oct. 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Funeral services celebrating the life of Rose Anita Leach will follow at 4 p.m. with Pastor Vern “Bud” Norman officiating. Luncheon will follow at Faith Lutheran Church in Rock. Burial will be in the Fernwood Cemetery in Gladstone. The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Leach family. Please visit where you can express your sympathy to the family.
