Webelos Scouts from Pack 411, Den 5 of Escanaba, recently took part in Jamboree on the Air, an annual Scouting event that uses amateur radio to link Scouts around the world, around the nation, and in their own community. Held on the third full weekend of October each year, this worldwide jamboree requires no travel, other than to a nearby radio amateur’s ham shack. This year’s event began on Friday, Oct. 18, and went until midnight Sunday, Oct. 20. The Scouts visited the Telegraph Shack at the UP Gas and Steam Engine Village in Escanaba and were able to use Internet access, as well as to communicate with ham radios. With the aid of Rich Thompson, who was in charge of the Telegraph Shack, the Scouts were given a tour first and then were allowed to talk to other scouts/people everywhere. While visiting the Shack, the Scouts learned about ham radios, cb’s, other forms of communications, past and present. Taking part in the adventure were: from left, Trevor Mathieson, Cody Wellman, Danny Groleau, Rich Thompson, Tyler Kutchie, and Zack Morehouse.
