Chainsaw carver’s pole building destroyed by fire

COOKS – A local chainsaw carver’s pole building and contents were destroyed by fire Wednesday evening, according to Inwood Township fire officials.

A pole building, owned by James W. Denkins, of 794N County Road 437, Cooks, was a total loss, said Assistant Fire Chief Scott Williams this morning. Three vehicles parked outside the building and tools and wood carvings inside the structure were destroyed in the blaze.

Following a call from a passerby, Negaunee Regional Central Dispatch directed Inwood Township to the scene around 5:30 p.m.

Upon the department’s arrival, the building was engulfed in flames, said Williams, adding very strong south winds hampered firefighting efforts. Firefighters cleared the scene at around 9 p.m.

In addition to local law enforcement, fire departments providing mutual aid included Manistique Public Safety and Thompson, Hiawatha, Doyle, Garden and Nahma townships.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire has not been determined, said Williams.
