Make Besse Park smoke-free

“Earlier this month, Escanaba’s City Council opposed a resolution (3-2) to designate the new John D. Besse Park smoke-free.

The resolution would have prohibited smoking and applied current park rules to the John D. Besse Park, but the resolution failed.

The original ordinance for Escanaba parks was passed in July 2011, and has had favorable outcomes in our community’s outdoor recreational spaces. Some benefits include decreased exposure to secondhand smoke, decreased cigarette butt litter, and positive health modeling for children.

I support the great work Escanaba began over two years ago designating city playgrounds, ball fields, and miscellaneous outdoor sites smoke-free. In 2011, our community thoughtfully considered this ordinance, and we have been enjoying smoke-free parks and beaches ever since.

It seems only natural that the John D. Besse Park would be included.”
