Leon Herman Leutz
BRIGHTON, Mich. – Leon Herman Leutz passed away on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at the age of 89. Born on Oct. 23, 1924, in Taylor, N.D., he was the son of Herman and Ivah (Unumb) Leutz. Leon returned to the Brighton area in 2010 from Escanaba, Mich. He was a graduate of the Schools of Engineering at University of Michigan and Notre Dame and received his master’s degree from MIT in nuclear engineering. He closed out his Naval career as a teacher at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He retired at the rank of commander in the U.S. Navy serving his country from 1942 to 1964. Leon retired in 1990 from Townsend and Bottum as a Project Engineer.
Beloved husband of Lorraine (Stebbins) Leutz whom he married on May 26, 1945, she preceded him in death on June 26, 2009. Father of sons Todd (Cathy) Leutz and Scott Leutz of Brighton and daughter, Pamela Leutz of Escanaba. Grandfather of Joshua (Molly), Ty (Sarah), and TJ Leutz and the proud great-grandfather of Sierra, Ava, Amelie, Abigail, and Mae. He is survived by his sister, Beverly Zabka of Locust Grove, Va., and dear friend and caregiver, Maria Miller Rosati.
Graveside funeral services are planned for this spring at Lakeview Cemetery. Leon’s family has requested that memorial contributions be directed to St. George Food Pantry, 803 W. Main, Brighton, MI 48116 and Special Olympics Area 27, 4668 Huntington Drive, Brighton, MI 48116.
