Ruth V. Possi

GLADSTONE – Ruth V. Possi, 89, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013.

She was born in Gladstone on July 7, 1924, and was the daughter of Arvid and Dagny (Erickson) Nelson and Stepmother Tilly. Ruth was united in marriage to Raymond on Dec. 14, 1942. Ruth was the proud mother of five children and doting grandmother to many more. Her family was her pride and she took great satisfaction in watching her family grow. Ruth worked for many years at OSF St. Francis as a secretary and retired in the early 1990s. She was also a lifelong member of the Vasa Lodge.

Ruth was a charter member of Christ the King Lutheran Church and belonged to the Women’s Quilting club.

Ruth was an extremely intelligent lady who was always seeking knowledge, and an avid reader. Although not college-educated she had a great inquisitive mind and was not afraid to question the perceived “common knowledge.” Her home was filled with books and periodicals and she was especially fond of National Geographic and Smithsonian magazines. Not one to constrain herself to any particular subject, she could read a biography of Jim Morrison followed by a book about archaeology.

Ruth lost her mother to TB at the age of 4. Following the death of her mother, her Aunt Hildur moved to America from Sweden and helped to raise her. Aunt Hildur was her mentor. Although Ruth suffered from diabetes for years, being the strong woman she was, she took it all in stride.

Ruth was proud of her Swedish heritage and was known to make the best, thinnest Swedish Pancakes around. Hobbies of hers included, quilting, knitting, doing crossword puzzles and going to “Camp Roosevelt” in Foster City where she spent many happy years.

Besides being a beautiful person inside and out, Ruth was a naturally gracious person, who knew what was right from wrong and was not afraid to let other people know it! Ruth never lost her ability to laugh or have fun, even in her later years as her health declined. She was a quick wit and could easily take the air out of someone who was being long winded, by a roll of her eyes. She was especially fond of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The kids could sense this and gravitated towards her. She was a marvel to behold and will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She was a true lady in every sense of the word and a class act until the end. Those lucky to have known her will never forget her.

Ruth is survived by her children, Lynn Kositzke, Doug (Judy) Possi, Janice (Jerry) Stropich, Dan (Judy) Possi; grandchildren, Todd Kositzke, Nancy Gatien, Adam Kositzke, Jody Way, Earl Possi, Stephanie Walechka, Kevin Possi, Jeff Possi, Lance Possi, Mike Davis, Marla Stenberg, Geri Jo Berthaume, and Gina Larson; also surviving Ruth are 24 great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her by sister, Flora Kositsky; brothers, Bill and Roy Nelson; brother-in-law, Gerald Possi; and sister-in-law, Lee Possi.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond in 1998; son, David in 1984; son-in-law, Leroy “Tuffy” Kositzke; brother, Carl Nelson; and grandson, Keith Kositzke.
