Police identify child killed in fire

MENOMINEE – The child who died in a house fire in Menominee County early Friday has been identified as eight-year-old Nelson Charles Williams, according to Menominee County Sheriff Department.

The boy, along with his parents, Duaine Daniel WIlliams, 35, Dawn Marie Williams, 34, and his twin sister, Hailey Marie Williams, were asleep when a fire broke out at around 1 a.m. in their mobile home located at N16935 County Road 551.

The father, mother and daughter escaped from the burning home but the son was trapped inside, according to a news release from the sheriff’s department. A preliminary determination from the medical examiner is the boy died of smoke inhalation.

When Harris Township firefighters arrived at the scene, the structure was engulfed with flames and heavy smoke. Firefighters and police located Nelson and removed him from the trailer. He was transported by Rampart Emergency Medical Services to OSF St. Francis Hospital.

Duaine Williams was transported to the hospital where he was treated for cuts he received while trying to get his family out of the burning trailer, said sheriff’s deputies.

Dawn Williams and Hailey Williams were also transported to the hospital where they were treated for smoke inhalation. A sheriff’s deputy was also taken to the emergency room to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The three surviving family members and the sheriff’s deputy have since been released from the hospital, according to the news release.

The state fire investigator from Gaylord was at the scene Friday to investigate the cause of the blaze. A detective from the sheriff department and the medical examiner are also investigating the fire.

The family is receiving assistance from the Menominee County Victim Services Unit and the American Red Cross chapter from Iron Mountain.

Additional agencies assisting at the scene included Gourley Township Volunteer Fire Department, Bark River Township Volunteer Fire Department, Spalding Township Volunteer Fire Department, and Hannahville Police Department.
