Remember When?

Shopping for Christmas dinner meat in the early 1900s at the Martin Wenig Meat Market, located at 717 Delta Ave. in Gladstone, was a cool process. Customers stood in the unheated room or sat on one of the stools at the curved, marble-top counter and picked out the very chicken or meat they wanted. Mrs. Wenig and Martin are at right. Behind the counter are John Olson, center with crossed knives, and Claus Anderson, at right. Olson and Anderson later owned the market and after Anderson retired, Olson was the owner until the shop closed, probably in the 1940s. Others in the photo have not been identified. (Notice that Christmas trees were also on sale in the meat market).
