‘Project C.A.R.E.’ in sixth year
GLADSTONE – It was six years ago that three members of the Community of Christ Church in Gladstone got their heads together and brainstormed possible opportunities to help boost the coffers at St. Vincent de Paul’s Food Pantry. The trio – Donna Ritchie, Aleta Kaukola, and Mary Palka – devised a plan to prepare a community supper each month and donate the proceeds to the local charity.
Six years later, the program is still in operation with even more churches coming on board. Since its inception, PROJECT C.A.R.E. has raised over $12,000 for St. Vincent DePaul.
“It is an amazing amount for a small group of dedicated workers and our fantastic guests who come to enjoy the meal with others in our community,” said Ritchie, program coordinator.
The smells emanating from the Community of Christ kitchen are inviting as a group of women gather early on the day of the supper to begin the process of slicing, dicing, seasoning and simmering the soups that will be served that evening.
The soup suppers are held the first Monday of each month (October through March) and are served from 5-6:30 p.m. at the church fellowship hall. The menu always includes two varieties of soup, with sandwiches prepared on homemade bread. Desserts and drinks are included. The prices are $7 for adults and $5 for children 5-12.
Community of Christ Church is located at 1022 Wisconsin Avenue.
