Nancy C. Cheney
GULLIVER – Nancy C. Cheney, 75, of Gulliver, Mich., passed away Jan. 5, 2014, at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich.
She was born Jan. 3, 1939, in Ann Arbor, Mich., the daughter of Ernest and Augusta (Jaeger) Preuss and moved to Manistique with her parents in 1954 from Spring Lake, Mich. She attended Manistique High School and was a graduate with the Class of 1956. She continued her education at the Cook County School of Nursing in Chicago and graduated with the Class of 1959.
Nancy then entered the U.S. Air Force and served at Reese AFB, Texas, as a nurse, being discharged as a 2nd lieutenant.
On Dec. 23, 1960, the former Nancy C. Preuss married William B. Cheney in Lubbock, Texas. They lived throughout the United States as an Air Force family and moved to Gulliver in June of 1981.
Nancy was employed as a registered nurse and nursing supervisor at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique from August of 1981 until her retirement in December of 2002.
She enjoyed extensive world travel, letter writing, telling stories, sewing, and most importantly, being with her family.
Nancy is survived by her husband, William B. Cheney of Gulliver; daughters, Debra (Kevin) Captain of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Marsha (David) Matthews of Fond du Lac, Wis.; and her grandchildren, Andrew Leavitt, Leanne Matthews Reich, Charles Matthews and Scott Leavitt.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son in 1969; and her sister, Donna Gunderman.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique.
Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home with Celebrant Carole Cooper officiating.
A potluck luncheon will be served at the Manistique Senior Center following the funeral service.
Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery at Manistique.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Manistique Senior Center or to the Fond du Lac, Wisconsin Symphony Band.
