John E. Potvin
MANISTIQUE – John E. Potvin, 101, of 543 Park Ave., Manistique, Mich., passed away Friday evening, Jan. 3, 2014, at Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique.
John was born Nov. 5, 1912, in Garden, Mich., the son of John and Clara (Lester) Potvin. He attended grade school in Garden and graduated from Gladstone High School.
On Nov. 6, 1937, John married the former Stella Marie Gauthier in Garden, Mich. Together they made their home and raised their family in Manistique. Stella preceded him in death on March 28, 1983. He then married the former Fern Marie Chamberlain on Oct. 6, 1984 in Manistique. She preceded John in death on May 29, 2002.
John worked for many years for the State of Michigan as a fisheries aide with the Department of Natural Resources, retiring in 1974.
He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Third Degree Council 2026 of Manistique. John had a passion for gardening and loved growing and working with his flowers.
John is survived by his son, Douglas (Jo Ann) Potvin of Cooks, Mich.; his daughters, Kathe (Bert) Vail of Gulliver, Mich., and Carrie (Dennis) Gardapee of Green Bay, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded his death by his son, Keith John Potvin; brother, Vernon Potvin; and sisters, Gladys Lester, Myrtle Cameron, and Mary Deloria.
Visitation will be held from 3 and 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique.
Funeral services will follow at 5 p.m. at the funeral home with Celebrant Carole Cooper officiating.
Burial will be in the spring in New Garden Cemetery at Garden Township.
