Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Hanchek
CARNEY – Elizabeth “Betty” Hanchek, 84 of Carney, Mich., passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at Marquette General Hospital. Betty was born on July 14, 1929, in Gourley Township, Mich., to the late James and Anna (Blahnik) Kalishek. On Oct. 10, 1953, Betty married Theodore Hanchek at St. Bruno Catholic Church. Theodore preceded her in death on May 9, 1993. Betty was a teacher and librarian at Carney Nadeau Public Schools for many years. Betty loved to travel and was an avid card player. She further enjoyed gardening and reading. Above all else being with her family is what Betty enjoyed most. Betty was a member of St. Bruno Catholic Church where she was a member of St. Anne’s Society. She also belonged to the Red Hats, and Bagley Homemakers.
Survivors include her children, Fran (Anne), Katy (Dan) Ditto, Dick (Debbie), Bill (Kathy), Sue (Ron) Kalla, Barb (Bill) Foster, Mike (Kim), and Carolyn (Glenn) Watters; grandchildren, Patrick, Bridget, Michael, Tim, Nikki, Billy, Johanna, Emmalee, Deborah, John, Nicolas, Madelyn, Jack, Kassidy, Jessica, Mitchell and Bryan; great-grandchildren, Grayson, Kiera, Josie, Owen and Evan; two brothers, John H. Kalishek and Richard E. (Margaret) Kalishek; and her uncle, Herman Blahnik, of whom she was caregiver for many years.
Betty was preceded in death by her grandson, Benjamin Watters; and two brothers, Robert and James Kalishek.
Family and friends may call at St. Bruno Catholic Church in Nadeau, Mich., on Saturday, Feb. 1, after 11 a.m. until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m. with Father Michael Vichich officiating.
