Edward Q. ‘Ed’ McCarthy
ESCANABA – Edward Q. “Ed” McCarthy, 84, 6604 N Road, Escanaba, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, at Christian Park Health Care Center in Escanaba.
He was born on Aug. 25, 1929 in Escanaba, son of John J. and Laura A. (Quinn) McCarthy. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1947. Ed then continued his studies at Michigan State University for forestry.
Ed served in the National Guard for six years.
On June 16, 1951, Edward married Patricia Bovin at All Saints Church in Gladstone.
Ed retired as publisher from the Daily Press after 32 years when there was a change in ownership. He worked for Mead Paper for 11 years.
He enjoyed hunting, golfing, bowling, traveling, reading, crossword puzzles, singing and enjoyed feeding the wildlife.
Ed was past president and former member of the Highland Golf Club, member of the Wells Lions Club, Lake Bluff Golf Club, president of Wildlife Unlimited for 19 years, a member of the Remnants Barbershop Chorus since 1955, Mead Retirees Club, and a former member of Bay Pines board and St. Anne’s Church and church council.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia of Escanaba; two sons, Ed (Sue) McCarthy, Jr. and Tim (Julie) McCarthy both of Escanaba; daughter, Patty (Tom) Sealander of Gladstone; grandchildren, Nicole (Kevin) Kang, Jenelle (Justin) Spaulding, Chris Sealander, Jason (Jamie) McCarthy, Jessica (Nick) Nolde, Edward P. (Jenny) Mal, Erin McCarthy, Kyle (Lauren) Vanderlinden, Tony Fiorillo, Trisha Anderson, and Meghen and Quintin McCarthy; three step grandchildren, Adam Marenger (Kandi Bourdeau), Jessie (Mykeda) Marenger, and Tara Marenger; and nine great grandchildren; sister, LaVerne Douck of Escanaba; brother, William (Judy) McCarthy of Elkton, MD; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughters, Colleen Kay Anderson and Kathleen Fiorillo; granddaughter, Shayla; brother, John; sisters, Laura Koch and Marianne Utt.
Visitation will be on Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, from 1-4:30 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. The Remnants Barbershop Chorus will have a tribute starting at 4 p.m. during the visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 5 p.m. at St. Anthony’s Church with Rev. Rick Courier officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall.
Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wildlife Unlimited. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
