George G. ‘Buddy’ Winling Jr.

RAPID RIVER – George G. “Buddy” Winling Jr., 60, of Rapid River, died unexpectedly Friday, Feb. 7, 2014.

George was born March 31, 1953, in Lansing, Mich., and he graduated in 1971 from Escanaba High School. Following graduation he was an ironworker and belonged to Union Local 8 traveling many states. George told many ironworker storiesworking on the Mackinac Bridge, Miller Park and many other big projects.

After several years in Milwaukee, George moved back to Rapid River to spend time with his kids, grandkids and other family members.

In George’s younger days, he loved to ice fish, hunt and camp with his kids. He was an avid Harley-Davison rider, loved to cook, and he loved the outdoors.

Survivors include: son, Chris (Courtney McCormick) Winling of Waukegan, Ill.; twin daughters, Toni (Cory) Schram of Rapid River and Tammy (Tom) Helman of Gladstone; eight grandchildren, Regan and Andrew Winling, Veronica, McKenzi and Brady Schram and Jared, Abbi and Cooper Helman; sister, LouAnn (Richard) Hakes of Escanaba.

In addition to his parents, George and Marge Winling Sr., he was preceded in death by a nephew, Troy Hakes.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the St. Charles Catholic Church Parish Hall in Rapid River. A luncheon will be served during the gathering hours. Memorial contributions in memory of George may be directed to the family for a memorial to be established at a later date.
