Wolverines pummel Rockets

PERKINS – The Mid Peninsula boys had one of their best shooting performances of the season Friday night and it paid off in the form of a 73-44 dual-conference victory over rival Rapid River.

The Wolverines who shot 29-of-56 (51 percent) from the field, hit seven three-pointers and put three players in double figure scoring.

“I was pretty proud of the fact that we had good shot selection. We didn’t force too much at all,” said Wolverines head coach Mark Branstrom. “When we had a good shot, we took it.”

Mid Pen led from start to finish and kicked things off with a triple from Evan Winkelbauer. Chad Branstrom later hit two treys in the first quarter as the Wolverines got out to a 12-4 lead and 19-17 advantage going into the second.

Winkelbauer led the Wolverines with 20 points and seven assists. Chad Branstrom also had 20 points and eight rebounds and Alden Pellinen added 12 points with seven rebounds.

Mid Pen also received a nice effort from freshmen Mitch Barron and Duane Englund. Barron was 3-for-3 from the field and Englund played well defensively, including a nice swipe from Rockets forward Jake Pearson and fast break layup to follow.

“Englund had his hands everywhere tonight and into everything,” said coach Branstrom. “Trey Branstrom defended Jake Pearson and kept working on him and Pellinen was 5-for-6 from the floor and had some nice interior shots.”

Pearson led Rapid River (5-11, 3-8 CUP, 2-9 Skyline) with 20 points and had a couple nice coast-to-coast buckets as well. Hayden Hardwick added 17 points.

“Pearson and Hardwick are a handful,” said Branstrom. “Not too many people want to get in front of him (Pearson).”

The Wolverines (3-14, 2-9 CUP, 2-9 Skyline) had just seven turnovers and hauled in 34 rebounds as a team.

“This is a real big win for the kids and it’s the right time of year to start playing,” said Branstrom. “A lot of good things came about.”
