Vivian V. Hoffman

GLADSTONE – Vivian V. Hoffman, 97, of Gladstone, formerly Grand Rapids, Mich., passed away Tuesday Feb. 11, 2014, at Lakeview Assisted Living in Gladstone. She was born Dec. 24, 1916, in Tampa, Fla., and was the daughter of William and Louisa Miller. Vivian and her family moved from Florida to Michigan when she was a young child. She graduated from Creston High School in Grand Rapids with the class of 1934.

The former Vivian Miller married Peter Hoffman on Dec. 31, 1940, in Grand Rapids and he preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 1976. Vivian was employed for 25 years at the Herpolsheimer Department Store in Grand Rapids until her retirement. After her retirement she helped care for her grandchildren when her daughter returned to work. Vivian was a volunteer at Kent Community Hospital and was an active in her church. Prior to losing her sight she enjoyed reading, knitting, word puzzles, playing cards and lunching with friends.

Vivian V. Hoffman is survived by: daughter, Linda (David) Pipe of Gladstone; two grandchildren, Jennifer Pipe of Woodbridge, Va., and Ryan (Jessica) Pipe of Grand Haven, Mich.; two great-grandchildren, Adrianna and Garrett; sisters, Velma Fogarty of Charlotte, N.C., and Ann Churchhill of Grand Rapids, Mich.; brother, Calvin (Ardith) Miller of Grand Rapids, Mich; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by infant daughter, Carole Jean, and infant brother, and brother, Philip Miller.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, at the Van Strien Funeral Chapel in Grand Rapids, Mich. Funeral services celebrating the life of Vivian V. Hoffman will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Monday at the Van Strien Funeral Chapel with Pastor Brad Cochrane officiating. Burial will take place in the Fair Plains Cemetery in Grand Rapids, Mich.
