Cheryl Lynn Roberts

ARNOLD – Cheryl Lynn Roberts, 66, of 52232 County Road 426, Arnold, Mich., passed away Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at her home in Arnold of an apparent heart attack.

She was born on Sept. 27, 1947 in Marquette, and was the daughter of Matthew and Betty (McMaster) Whitelaw.

Cheryl attended Bishop Baraga High School and after high school she began her employment career as a nurse’s aid working in various Marquette area nursing homes.

In 1965, Cheryl married Robert Dillinger, then married Dennis McCleod, and on June 7, 1985, she married James E. Roberts, Jr. in Northland.

Cheryl and Jim resided in South Carolina for most of the last 20 years where they were foster parents to over 100 children over 18 years. Twice the couple was named South Carolina’s “Foster Parents of the Year.”

Cheryl was a caring, supportive, and loving foster mother and took great pride in helping children in need. Prior to retiring from foster parenting, Cheryl and Jim adopted the two children that they received as newborns out of the hospital.

Being native “Yoopers,” in the fall of 2013, Cheryl and Jim where called back home looking forward to retiring on the Roberts Homestead in Arnold.

Her greatest joys in life were her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. She was an avid Green Bay Packer fan, animal lover, and a passionate deer hunter.

Cheryl is survived by her husband, James, of Arnold; daughter, Vicki Hall, of Monks Corner, S.C., children, Kadie, Jeremy, Jesse, and Sara, and great-grandchild, Jaycee; son, Kenny (Michelle) Dillinger, of Houghton, and children, Cody, Taylor, Sydney, and Madison; son, Chad Dillinger, of Whitewater, Wis., and children, Faith and Brandon; son, Army MSG Michael (Jennifer) Dillinger, of Fort Lewis, Wash., and children Sophie and Lily; daughter, Fawn (Jim) Hall, of Goose Creek, S.C., and children Brooke and Hailey; son, Jimmy McCleod of Goose Creek, S.C.; son, Anthony Roberts, of Arnold; daughter, Kerri Roberts, of Arnold; sisters, Mary (Leigh) Brinker, of Kinross, Shelia (Mike) Holmes, of Arnold, Debbie Mohrman, of Marquette, and Lisa (Paul) Withey, of Park Falls, Wis.; brothers-in-law, Dean (Cheri) Roberts, of Gwinn, Jeff Roberts, of Arnold, John (Barb) Roberts, of Arnold, Gerald (Debbie) Roberts, of Gwinn, and Ron Kangas, of Gwinn; sisters-in-law, Connie (Paul) Williams, of Mountain Grove, Mo., Jacqueline (Rodger) Cole, of Northland, and Inez (Tony) Gustafson, of Foster City; and many nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents, sister Robin Kangas, brother Jimmy Whitelaw, and grandchildren Kadie and River Major.

A visitation will be held at the Wells Township Hall in Arnold on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, from noon to 2 p.m. Funeral services celebrating the life of Cheryl Lynn Roberts will follow at 2 p.m., with Coach Bill Hill of Gwinn officiating.
