Gerard Emil Bernier (Pretzel)

GARDEN – Gerard Emil Bernier (Pretzel), 91, of Garden, Mich., passed away Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique, Mich.

He was born June 25, 1922, in Garden, Mich., the son of Eugene and Philomene (Minnie) (Deloria) Bernier. Gerard attended grade school in Garden and graduated from Garden High School. Following graduation, he served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Iowa. Upon discharge from the Navy, he returned to Garden.

Gerard married the former Mary Jean Lester on Aug. 30, 1947, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Garden, where they made their home and raised their children.

During his military career Gerard worked as a naval barber. Following the military he worked in many grocery stores as a butcher. He later worked at Fayette State Park as a ranger, where he retired in 1987.

He was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Garden and a member of the American Legion Post 301 of Rapid River for 69 years.

Gerard enjoyed being in the woods, hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Jean Bernier of Garden, Mich.; daughter, Margaret (Darrel) LaVigne of New York; son, Peter Bernier of Minnesota; grandchildren, Alicia Fuss and Adam (Tricia) LaVigne; and great-grandchildren, Stephen LaVigne, Amelia and Elliott Fuss; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Gerard was preceded in death by his sister, Sister Grace Bernard (Elizabeth); and brothers, Eugene and Ernest Bernier.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m, Tuesday Feb. 25, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Garden, Mich.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. in the church with Father Mariusz Sierhart officiating.

Burial will be held in the spring, in New Garden Cemetery in Garden Township with military honors.
