Trojans, Saints on top of final UPSSA girls poll
St. Ignace and Forest Park stand unanimously on top of the final Class ABC and Class D girls basketball polls of the season.
The No. 1 Trojans (20-0) enter the postseason as indisputably the top Class D girls basketball program in the Upper Peninsula, if not the state. Forest Park is also ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press poll and will be heavily favored to win win its district, as will No. 2 Superior Central (18-2), No. 3 Stephenson (17-2), No. 4 Brimley (17-3) and No. 5 Dollar Bay (15-5).
The No. 1 Saints (18-2) have been on fire as of late and should also be favored to tear through their Class district and regional before facing a likely challenge in the state quarterfinal. The Saints open tournament play Wednesday night at Inland Lakes.
No. 2 Houghton (18-2) will likely meet a worthy challenge, perhaps from No. 5 Gladstone (15-6) in its district, but will also be a favorite to win a title. The Braves, who have now won eight straight, are already off to a winning start in district play after defeating Kingsford 53-43, Monday evening.
Local teams in the boys polls fared well this week.
No. 4 Escanaba (15-4) moved up one spot after defeating Gladstone (7 58-52, Friday night and Gwinn (10-8), 75-60 on Tuesday.
Class D No. 5 Carney-Nadeau (15-4) was ranked this week for the first time since the second week of the poll. The Wolves defeated No. 3 Forest Park (16-2) at home, Saturday 53-51.
No. 1 North Central (18-0) stands as the last remaining undefeated boys team in the Upper Peninsula. The Jets wrap up their season with a premier game at Forest Park Tuesday night, before hosting Mid Peninsula (3-16) Thursday.
