Esky man arrested following rollover accident

ESCANABA – An Escanaba man remained in jail this morning following his arrest for drunken driving, drugs, a license violation, and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident Wednesday night in Escanaba.

Escanaba Public Safety was on the lookout for a careless driver reported earlier when a rollover accident occurred on the 800 block of 3rd Avenue South at around 10 p.m., said police.

A red Jeep had hit a snowbank, went airborne, flipped over, and hit the front end of a black pickup truck parked at a residence, explained Det. Lt. Darin Hunter this morning.

The driver of the Jeep – a 27-year-old Escanaba man – fled the scene on foot and was apprehended by officers shortly after and not far from the accident scene, said Hunter.

The driver was injured in the accident and was taken by ambulance to OSF St. Francis Hospital where he was treated and then later lodged in Delta County Jail.

The suspect was arrested for drunken driving, possession of analogues, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, and driving on a suspended license – second or subsequent offense.

Charges are being reviewed by the prosecutor’s office. The name of the suspect is being withheld pending authorization of charges.

Two male passengers in the Jeep were not injured in the crash, according to the police report. They remained at the accident scene.

The parked pickup that was damaged in the accident belonged to Tim Kobasic of Escanaba.
