Robert Emil Beaudry
GLADSTONE – Robert Emil Beaudry, 84, of 305 Delta Ave., Gladstone, passed away Wednesday evening, March 5, 2014, at the St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba following a lengthy illness.
Robert was born June 26, 1929, in Gladstone. He was the only child of Emil and Anna (Erickson) Beaudry. He attended the “Buckeye” school in Gladstone and graduated from Gladstone High School. As a football player he enjoyed playing against Gladstone’s arch-rival, Escanaba, which they almost beat in 1946. Gladstone lost by 1 point.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the front lines for two years. He received the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal, Army Occupation Medal (Japan), National Defense Service Medal and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.
He met his wife soon after he arrived home from Korea and they were married May 23, 1953, and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2013.
When he came back he was employed by Marble Card Corp. for a few years and then left to become a brakeman for the Soo Line Railroad in Gladstone. He didn’t like being away from his family as much as he was so when he heard that Harnischfeger was hiring he put his name in there and when they called, he left the railroad and worked there until they closed the plant and moved to Milwaukee (25 years).
Bob was a whiz on roller skates and liked showing his skills to his children and grandchildren. He won a medal for cross-country skiing when he was 65. He was very active up until a few years ago.
He also liked traveling, riding his motorcycle, visiting family, playing Uno with the grandchildren, throwing horseshoes, at one time he and wife belonged to a horseshoe league. They had quite a few trophies, team and individual. He helped build Kids Kingdom along with many other volunteers. He also loved helping his wife serve refreshments after church on Sunday until he was unable to do so.
He was also an avid hunter and fisherman and there are many “horns” on the wall in the garage to prove his prowess.
His family feels really blessed to have had him with them for so many years. Any memorials in his name should be directed to the United Evangelical Covenant Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
He is survived by his wife Janet Miller Beaudry and children, Marie (Bruce) Fudula, Marilyn (Mike) Shandonay, Marlene (Bob) Casey, Robert Jr (Chris) Beaudry and Myra Acevedo and grandchildren, Eric Fudula, Erin (Kyle) Genewick, Emma Shandonay, Nicole Casey, Bob Casey, Meghan (Mike) Olson, Chelsea Beaudry, Josh Beaudry, Aimee Beaudry, Arlene Acevedo, Andre Acevedo and one great-grandchild, Andrew Olson, with another one due any day.
