Merwin W. Nelson

BOTHELL, Wash. – Merwin W. Nelson, 88, of Bothell, Wash., died Feb. 24, 2014, at Evergreen Hospice in Kirkland, Wash.

He was born Feb. 15, 1926, in Gladstone, to Ollie and Esther Nelson. After graduation from high school in 1944 he joined the Navy and served as a radioman aboard the USS Belet and in Japan. On May 31, 1947 he married Carol P. Anderson of Gladstone, whom he had met in the church choir. He enjoyed several careers including telegrapher for the SooLine Railroad, insurance sales with Lutheran Brotherhood, and director of parish activities at Bethany Lutheran Church in Escanaba, Mich. He began work in hospital management in Ashland, Wis., followed by Superior, Wis. His greatest professional accomplishment was becoming hospital administrator in Waseca, Minn., and Gladwin, Mich. Retiring in 1987, he and Carol moved to Washington to be near their children and families.

Merwin was always involved with the church. He served as a lay minister for several congregations in Wisconsin and Michigan. He was active in Rotary for 33 years, becoming a “Paul Harris Fellow.” He enjoyed spending time with family, model trains, golf, music and playing the piano.

He is survived by Carol, his wife of 66 years; his son, Jeffrey (Kyoko); and grandchildren, Jay and Hana of Kirkland, Wash.; son, Gary (Donna); and grandson, Christopher of Bremerton, Wash.; daughter, Julie Olson (Gary); and grandson, Jonathan of Kennewick, Wash.; granddaughter, Stephanie Pearson (Matthew) of Ellensburg, Wash.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ron and Joan Anderson of Gladstone; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Marilyn Larson and her husband Russ; his brother, Glenn and his wife Elna; and his grandson, Derek, son of Gary and Donna.

Interment took place on Feb. 28 at Floral Hills Cemetery in Lynnwood, Wash.

A memorial service will be held at First Lutheran Church, 10207 NE 183rd Street, Bothell, Wash., on March 15 at 3 p.m.
