Rollover crash case in court

ESCANABA – A Manistique driver – arrested on drunk driving and drug violations following a rollover in Escanaba last week – has been bound over to circuit court.

Steven Ray Smith, 26, was driving a Jeep on the 800 block of 3rd Avenue South at 10 p.m. on Feb. 26 when the vehicle hit a snowbank, went airborne, flipped over, and hit the front end of a pickup truck parked at a residence.

During Smith’s preliminary examination in district court, he was bound over to the higher court on two counts of possession of analogues involving the drugs Alprazolem and Suboxone (each a two-year felony), one count of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (a 93-day misdemeanor), and driving on a suspended license, second or subsequent offense ( a one-year misdemeanor).

Smith remains lodged at the county jail in lieu of a $3,000 cash bond. A date will be scheduled in circuit court where he may make a plea or go to trial.

Prior to the rollover, Escanaba Public Safety was on the lookout for a careless driver reported earlier that evening. After the accident, Smith fled the scene. Police immediately apprehended him nearby.

Smith was injured in the accident and was taken by ambulance to OSF St. Francis Hospital where he was treated and then later lodged in jail. Two male passengers in the Jeep were not injured in the crash, said police.

In addition to the above charges, Smith was also initially arrested on a charge of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident.
