Ruth Violet Miller

ESCANABA – Ruth Violet Miller, 102, of 1401 N. 23rd St., Escanaba, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2014, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on July 6, 1911, in Stonington, Mich., and was the daughter of Engwald and Julia (Erickson) Thorsen. Ruth attended the Central School in Stonington, Mich.

During World War II, Ruth worked at the Escanaba Paper Company. Following the war, she began her employment career at Marble Arms as a shipping clerk and remained there for 27 years until her retirement.

On April 9, 1960, the former Ruth Violet Thorsen married Joseph J. Miller and he preceded her in death on Sept. 18, 2005.

Ruth had a great love for her family. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother.

She was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church.

Ruth is survived by: daughter, Betty Erickson of Gladstone; nine grandchildren, Linda Erickson, Bonnie (Pete) DeMay, Cindy (Scott) Mitchell, Connie (Ernest) Hadel, Debbie (Robert) Gierke, Diane (Terry) Deloria, Dale Norden, Darrell Norden, and David (Wendy) Norden; 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; sister, Hazel (Everett) Mattson of Brookfield, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Engwald and Julia; husband, Joseph; son, Gilbert; brothers, Elmer, Stanley, Ernest and Wally Thorsen.

A visitation will take place on Wednesday, March 12, at Christ the King Lutheran Church from 10 a.m. to noon. Funeral services celebrating the life of Ruth Violet Miller will follow at noon with Rev. Chris Johnson officiating. A luncheon will be served in the church fellowship hall at the conclusion of the funeral service. Burial will take place in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery.
