Michael J. ‘Big Mike’ ‘Mickie’ Doran

ESCANABA – Michael J. “Big Mike” “Mickie” Doran, 63, 210 N. 14th St., Escanaba, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014, at the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette.

He was born on June 24, 1949, in Escanaba, son of Jim and Margaret (Morin) Doran. Michael graduated from Escanaba High School.

Michael served in the Army during Vietnam from 1968 until his honorably discharge in 1971. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Army Commendation Medal.

On May 31, 1975, Michael married Sandra Thennes at St. John’s Church in Garden.

Michael was employed by the city of Escanaba and Butch, Quinn, Rosemurgy and Jardis Law Office, retiring in 1995.

He loved sports and was a dedicated volunteer for the Special Olympics. He was a member of St. Joseph and St. Patrick’s Church.

Among survivors include his wife, Sandra; daughter, Mary (Jason) Haindl of Appleton; sisters, Judy Ottensman of Escanaba, Gloria Mateja of Arkansas and Dolores Dobson of Iron River; brothers, Jim (Sue) Doran and Bob (Jan) Doran, both of Escanaba; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Rita Lindblad.

Visitation will be on Thursday, March 20, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 6 p.m. at St. Joseph and St. Patrick Church with Rev. Eric Olson officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall.

Memorials may be directed to the Parkinson’s Foundation or a Mass said in Michael’s name. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Burial will take place in the spring in New Garden Cemetery.
