Man charged with shooting his son

PALMER – Michigan State Police have identified the suspect and victim involved in Saturday’s shooting in Palmer.

Richard E. Lehto, 52, of Richmond Township was arraigned in Marquette County Circuit Court Monday morning on charges of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, discharging a firearm under the influence and domestic violence, third offense.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred just after noon Saturday in which Lehto allegedly shot his son, 18-year-old Zachary R. Lehto, during an argument. Zachary Lehto underwent emergency surgery at Marquette General Hospital Saturday.

Marquette General Hospital officials confirmed that Zachary Lehto was still a patient, but offered no other information as to his condition. State police said he was in stable condition.

Richard Lehto remains lodged at Marquette County Jail. His bond has been set at $227,500 and his preliminary exam is set for 9:15 a.m. March 26.
