Lois Margaret Carlson
ESCANABA – Lois Margaret Carlson, 88, of Escanaba and Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., died Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at Tendercare in Sault Ste. Marie. She was born May 27, 1925, in Stalwart, Mich., to Everett T. and Katherine A. (Crawford) Johnson.
Lois grew up in Stalwart and attended the one room school house in Stalwart before completing her education at Pickford Schools. After high school graduation, she moved to the Detroit area and worked in a factory at Fort Wayne Army Post until the end of World War II. Lois returned to the Upper Peninsula and worked for Michigan Bell in Sault Ste. Marie. She married William “Bill” Carlson in 1947 in Sault Ste. Marie. They raised their family in Sault Ste. Marie until 1968, when they made their home in Escanaba.
Lois was a very active member with the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Escanaba. She also volunteered at many American Red Cross blood drives. After raising six boys, Lois became employed at Woolworths in Sault Ste. Marie and then in Escanaba. She also worked at the Circle M Country Store in Escanaba.
Lois enjoyed fishing, baking, cooking, and crocheting. She liked gardening and yard work. She was a proud and active “Hockey Mom.” She enjoyed all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Lois is survived by five sons, Dale Carlson of Stalwart, Kenneth (Corra) Carlson of Sault Ste. Marie, Donald (Catherine) Carlson of Escanaba, John Carlson of Interlachen, Fla., and Chip (Christine) Carlson of Sault Ste. Marie; daughter-in-law, Susan Carlson of Cornell; grandchildren, Christie (Mike) Carlson, Carrie (James) Flath, Bill (Deanne) Carlson, Chad (Cathi) Carlson, Stacy (Brad) Reed, Emily Carlson, Renee McKenzie, Rachel (Joe) Bommarito, Randi Gravelle, Michael Libertoski and Charlie Carlson; great-grandchildren, Lauren, Evan, Griffin, Carrigen, Rowen, Jane, Claire, Kate, Jared, Cailey, Braylin and Joey.
Lois is also survived by one brother, Lawrence (Shelva) Johnson of Sault Ste. Marie; and one sister, Ethel (Tom) Yoder of Clarkston, Mich.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Janet Johnson, Judy Johnson, Harriet Johnson, Pete (Verla) Moore, John Moore, Robert and Virginia Carlson; and many nieces and nephews.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; three sons, twins, William and Robert Carlson, and Thomas Carlson; brothers, Robert Johnson, Everett Johnson Jr., Dale Johnson, Jack Johnson, Donald Johnson, and James Johnson; and one sister, Betty Crowley.
Lois also leaves behind her extended family at Tendercare, her special friends Bruce, Darr, Kristina, and the great nurses and CNAs that helped make her feel at home while living there. During Lois’s stay at Tendercare she was the vice president for the Residents Council.
Services will be held Saturday, April 5, at Reamer Galer Funeral Home, 24549 S. M-129 in Pickford, Mich. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with funeral service to follow at 1 p.m.
