Lions to host Kentucky Derby Party

ESCANABA – It’s that time of year again to start working on your hats and planning to attend the second annual Kentucky Derby Party.

This year’s event will again be held at the Highland Golf Club on Saturday, May 3, the same weekend as the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby. The local event is being sponsored, in part, by Positively and Ever After Decorating. Derby attire is encouraged, but not required to attend.

Doors open at 5 p.m., allowing time to watch the pre-race events and to check out the field of horses competing, poll positions, the jockeys, the owners, who’s favored and race conditions with the race being run at 6:24. The winners of the Race Raffle will be drawn immediately after the race.

Besides the viewing of the race, included in the $25 ticket price are hor d’oeuvres, dinner, desserts, a mint julep, music and dancing until 11. Throughout the evening, there will be opportunities to participate in a Hat Contest, 50/50 drawing, silent auctions and several jar raffles.

There will only be 150 tickets available and they can be purchased in advance from Adams Grocery or Northern Michigan National Bank in Bark River and Heynssens-Selin’s or Positively in Escanaba or from any Heart of the North Lions Club member. To reserve a table in advance, which can seat either four or six, call Pat VanEnkevort at (906) 399-6716.

A large portion of the funds raised from the Derby Party will be designated to Bay Cliff.

Ladies from Delta and Menominee counties came together to form the Heart of the North Lions in 2004 and since then, they have been living up to their motto “We Serve.”

Through various fund-raisers held throughout the year, they have raised thousands of dollars which have been returned to the community, with a special emphasis on youth and youth programs, with contributions to schools, scholarships, Christmas gift giving and supporting UP wide Lions projects including the following: Diabetes Awareness, Bay Cliff, Teaching Family Homes, Leader Dog, Sight and Hearing to name just a few.
