Manistique CBC fundraiser Sunday
MANISTIQUE – This Sunday will mark the 47th year for the CBC Fund Drive, an annual fundraising event that supports charities benefitting Schoolcraft County and the rest of the Upper Peninsula.
“The first ‘C’ stands for the American Cancer Society, the ‘B’ stands for Bay Cliff Health Camp and that second ‘C’ stands for Community Charities,” said Erik Mason, CBC second chair for 2014.
This year the CBC Committee has selected the U.P. Beacon House as the community charity that will benefit from the fund drive along with the American Cancer Society and Bay Cliff Health Camp. The U.P. Beacon House in Marquette is a donation-based hospitality house that provides rooms to patients receiving medical care and their loved ones.
“Our goal this year is to raise $50,000, and that $50,000 will be split between those three charities,” said Mason.
While CBC collects funds at other events – including a basketball tournament held earlier this month, CBC button sales, and events run by local businesses and community organizations – the main event is the Fund Drive, which will take place Sunday from noon until 7 p.m. at the Manistique High School.
In the tradition of telethons and radio fund drives, the CBC Fund Drive will be broadcast live on television and radio. Those interested in watching the fund drive can view the event live on cable channel 21 in Manistique, 8 in Escanaba, 8 in Marquette, 19 in Iron Mountain, and 19 in Houghton. Live audio will also be broadcast in Manistique on AM 1490 or online at www.wtiqradio.com.
The event will feature talent performances, an auction, and pledge collection.
Auction items include family passes for tours of Tahquamenon Falls; gift certificates for shows at Kewadin Casinos; a one-night stay at the Island Resort and Casino; and items signed by the 2013 Green Bay Packers, players from the Detroit Red Wings, University of Michigan players and coaches, and Detroit Lions players. All auction items can be viewed online at www.cbcschoolcraft.org.
“They’re all donated by businesses or community members,” said Mason.
Anyone interested in donating an item for the auction can still do so by contacting the State Savings Bank of Manistique at 341-4600.
During the CBC Fund Drive anyone who attends the event at the high school can make a bid or a pledge. Those who cannot make it to the Fund Drive personally can still place bids by calling 341-4701 or make pledges by calling 341-9701. The names of pledgers will be read on-air.
“It’s a great event and … you can help in any way by bidding on an item, or making a pledge, or coming down, or just checking it out (on TV),” said Mason.
In addition to the various performances and presentations that will take place during the CBC Fund Drive, other events will take place concurrently with the Fund Drive. A bake sale hosted by the Manistique Senior Center will take place in the school cafeteria, a swim-a-thon will take place in the school pool, and a co-ed volleyball tournament will take place in the school gymnasium.
A Fun Shoot held by the Manistique Rifle and Pistol Club will also be taking place during the event. Instructors and firearms will be available at the club located at 3808N M-94. Shooting will begin at 9 a.m. and will run until the end of the fund drive at 7 p.m. For more information call 341-2124.
