Resolution Services Program works with victims

ESCANABA – UPCAP Resolution Services Program provides mediation services to 10 of the 15 counties in the Upper Peninsula. The UPCAP Resolution Services Program provides free confidential community dispute resolution services to Delta, Schoolcraft, Menominee, Dickinson, Iron, Gogebic, Ontonagon, Houghton Keweenaw and Baraga counties. Areas of special interest and commitment include Victim Offender Mediation. Our program has worked collaboratively with Courts and Law Enforcement agencies for the past 13 years.

Victim Offender mediation provides a face to face mediation between victims and offenders with trained mediators. The process holds the offenders accountable for their behavior and provides the victim the opportunity to voice their concerns.

Mediation also provides victims with a safe forum to discuss the offense and regain a sense of control over the situation. The victims have direct input regarding restitution and a chance to begin putting their victimization in the past.

Through this process, crime victims are given an opportunity to have their questions answered and their restitution and emotional needs met.

The person responsible for the crime is held accountable for his or her actions and given an opportunity to make things right.

This process represents justice principals which are age-old; that is, when an individual wrongs another, the offender has the responsibility to make amends to the victim. In so doing, the offender’s obligation to society is also fulfilled. It is bases on the understanding that crime is a human problem.

The restorative process is an effort to find “common ground” between victim, community and offender. Victim Offender mediation is a good way to make a difference in the community.
