Alta Doreen Gaffney

ESCANABA – Alta Doreen Gaffney, 62, of 225 N. 13th St., Escanaba, Mich., passed away Monday evening, April 14, 2014, at the St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba.

Alta was born Jan. 13, 1952, in Aurora, Ill., the daughter of Robert and Mildred (Massy) Wagner. She was raised in Gulliver, Mich., where she attended school and graduated in 1970 from Manistique High School. Alta moved to Escanaba in 1975 where she worked at the Christian Park Health Care Center and Village. Due to her health, she retired after over 20 years of employment. Alta married Richard Gaffney on April 29, 1989, in Gladstone and they made their home in Escanaba.

Alta was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Escanaba. She loved cooking, gardening and tending to her tomato plants. She also enjoyed eating Chinese and seafood.

In addition to her husband Richard, survivors include: children, Stephanie (Ross Bender) Smart of Escanaba, Mich., Ryan (Rene’ Burnett) Smart of Kalamazoo, Mich., Felicia Gaffney of Escanaba, Mich., Deborah Gravermoen of Hugo, Minn., Daniel (Kristen) Gaffney of Little Rock, Arkansas; sisters, Cindy (Merle) Sater of Elkhart, Ind., and Karen Simmons of Constantine, Mich.; 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and her dog “Pedro” also survive.

In addition to her parents, her daughter, Heather, and brother, Gunnar, preceded Alta in death, both in 1976.

Alta’s family will receive friends on Thursday, April 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Skradski Family Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services will follow with President Charles Barnes of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints officiating. Luncheon will follow at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1021 S. 14th St., Escanaba.
