George L. Koster

ESCANABA – George L. Koster, 88, Escanaba, passed to his Heavenly home on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, following a lengthy illness. He was born on Feb. 22, 1926, in Escanaba, the son of the late Peter and Albertine (Tarnus) Koster. On Feb. 26, 1949, he married the former Theresa LaFave at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Escanaba.

George served in China during World War II in the Calvary and with the Military Police. As a young man, he owned Koster Brothers Grocery with his brother Vic. George then worked as an industrial engineer at Harnischfeger until his retirement. He loved the outdoors, hunting, Great Lakes fishing, baseball and playing cards with his lifelong buddies, but most of all, he loved spending time at his camp.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years; six children, Mary (John) Sherman, Lori (Andrew) Koster, Sandra (Richard) Detry, Gigi (William) Overholt, Jim (Nancy) Koster and Tom (Carol) Koster; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his much loved nephew, Harold Koster; as well as numerous other nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Margaret; a granddaughter, Kimberly Sherman; two brothers, Victor and Peter Koster; and one sister, Marie.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to noon on Monday, May 5, at St. Anne’s Parish in Escanaba. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at noon on Monday at church with Fr. Francis DeGroot officiating. A luncheon will follow Mass in the church parish hall.

The Koster family would like to extend a thank you to the staff of Marquette General Hospice, Northwoods and the VA for their care and support during this difficult time, and a special thank you to Rev. Lewis and his wife Linda Hague.
