Officials investigate cause of fatal fire
K.I. SAWYER – A Michigan State Police fire investigator is aiding in an investigation into a fatal fire reported early Sunday morning at K.I. Sawyer.
Forsyth Township Fire Department Chief Don Hutchens said in a news release the blaze was reported at 12:51 a.m. and occurred in the 600 block of Valkyrie Street. Thirty firefighters, from three agencies, responded to the scene and found smoke coming out of the residence when they arrived.
Firefighters – who were told there may still be someone inside the residence – entered the home immediately, conducted a primary search of the upstairs and located a victim. The subject was removed from the home. Hutchens said an attempt to resuscitate the person was made, but was unsuccessful. The name and age of the person who perished in the fire was not released by fire officials.
Firefighters performed a secondary search of the residence, while efforts to suppress the blaze were in progress. Hutchens said the fire was contained to the upstairs bedroom. The home sustained minor smoke and water damage.
No firefighters were injured in the incident. Forsyth fire crews were on the scene for about five hours.
The state police fire investigator arrived early Sunday.
