Eugenia Chapekis named GFWC Woman of Achievement for 2013

ESCANABA – GFWC Escanaba Women’s Club has nominated Eugenia Chapekis as its 2013 Women of Achievement.

“Jean’s wonderful volunteer spirit beams within our community as she is so deserving of this award,” said GFWC president, Dianne Lahtinen. “Her life has been dedicated to the service of others and she has been a GFWC member for 40 years.”

During her years of service, Chapekis has served on the board as corresponding secretary, vice president and president. She has also served on several committees, including the annual Charity Ball, Education, International, Home Life, and Mini Marathon.

“People often say, ‘If you need something done, ask Eugenia to be in charge, and as we all know, she will get it done,” Lahtinen added.

Chapekis and her husband, Jim, are the parents of two children, Jennifer and Steven, and also have four grandchildren.

In addition to her work with GFWC, Chapekis is a volunteer at the OSF St. Francis Hospital Gift Shop and has been the chairperson for the card party at the Escanaba Country Club for many years.

She, along with Ruth Chown, were instrumental in organizing “The Friends of the Music Group,” which had several piano concerts to raise funds that enabled the group to purchase the grand piano for the Bonifas Arts Center.

“She gives her time selflessly and is always a helping hand,” Lahtinen continued.

Chapekis enjoys traveling, golfing with her husband, Jim, and golf partner, Marla Gossan. She also enjoys playing bridge, reading, shopping and pursuing her hobby of selling Avon products.
