Verna Cecilia Murray
ESCANABA – Verna Cecilia Murray, 89, of 1214 S. 15th. St., Escanaba, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2014, at Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba. She was born Feb. 20, 1925, in Escanaba and was the daughter of Matthew and Josephine (Miller) Decker. Verna graduated from Escanaba High School and then attended and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with her teaching degree. She taught school in Wisconsin for a few years. The former Verna C. Decker married Rodger T. Murray on July 26, 1952, and she preceded her in death on Sept. 18, 2013. Verna was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church and taught CCD at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. She was a member of the League of Women’s Voters, Escanaba Women’s Club, Lake Bluff Golf and Country Club, and enjoyed playing bridge, traveling, golfing, gardening and reading.
Verna Cecilia Murray is survived by: son, Michael (Janine) Murray of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; daughter, JoAnne Murray of Ohio; grandchildren, Zachary, Alexander and Benjamin (Fierra) and their child Lila; great-grandchild, Lila; sisters, Rita Loose of Yuma, Ariz., and Madelyn (Jay) Carwile of Wichita, Kan.; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by brother, Joseph Decker.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 10, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Verna C. Murray will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph/St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Eric Olson officiating. A luncheon will be served following the funeral services in the church fellowship hall. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.
