Labor of love keeps Monday Morning Quilters in stitches
STONINGTON – The second Sunday in May was a colorful date at Trinity Lutheran Church of Stonington.
On Mother’s Day each year, the church is decorated with quilts created by Trinity’s Monday Morning Quilters. Their work is displayed throughout the sanctuary, draped freely over railings and backs of pews, hanging from lecterns and furnishings.
Each year the quilters produce over 50 quilts for distribution to medical care facilities and group residences. Quilts have been provided to the Veterans Hospital in Iron Mountain, the Jacobetti center, Bay Cliff Health Camp and St. Jude residence. Members of the congregation who return home from a hospitalization find a quilt waiting for them.
During the “Quilt Sunday” service, the quilts are blessed, following which the congregation is treated to a pie social prepared by the quilters. Tables of pies are sold to fund materials for a new crop of quilts, sewn with love and prayer, to be sent out on a joyful mission from Trinity Lutheran Church.
Donations of 100-percent cotton fabric may be made by calling 474-9962.
Members of Trinity’s Monday Morning Quilters are: Diane Srutowski, Vicar; Carol Mosher, Ann Hager, Jo Rust, Lorraine Novak, Kathy Nachtwey, Tricia Sprague, Ginny Dahlin, Eleanor Weycker, Mary Latchat and Debbie Hoffman. Novak.
