Jensen, Ballard named Gladstone’s top seniors

GLADSTONE – On Wednesday, the Gladstone High School handed out its annual athletic awards.

The Eldon “Cappy” Keil Award is presented to the top senior male athlete, and this year, that went to Riley Ballard. Ballard earned eight varsity letters (two in football, two in basketball, and four in track) and in football, made the GNC All-Conference offensive team in 2013, along with being selected to the All-U.P. First Team in football. In track, Ballard earned All U.P. honors in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014. He will be attending Northern Michigan University.

The Senior Female Athlete Award was awarded to Callie Jensen. Jensen recorded nine varsity letters (three volleyball, two basketball, and four in golf). In volleyball, she was named to the GNC All-Conference Second Team in 2011, and the GNC All-Conference First Team in 2012, while also making the all-regional team in that year. In 2013, Jensen was named the GNC All-Conference Co-Player of the Year, and for the second consecutive year, made it on the all-regional team. Jensen also enjoyed success in baskeball, and was named to the GNC All-Conference Second Team in 2014, as well as the GNC All-Conference Defensive Team. In golf, Jensen was named to the GNC All-Conference team and the All-U.P. team 2011, 2012, and 2013. She will be attending the University of Michigan.

The Carla Choate Award is given to the top female basketball player, and is selected by their team. This year, that went to Jessica Beaudry. Beaudry received nine varsity letters throughout her career (three volleyball, three basketball, three softball). In basketball, she was named to the GNC All-Conference Second Team and the All-U.P. Special Mention Team, in 2013. In 2014, she made the GNC All-Conference First Team and the All-U.P. Second Team. Beaudry also was the female recipient of the United States Army Scholar Athletic Award, which is given to the top academic male and female senior athlete. She finished her high school career with a 4.0 GPA and will be attending Lakeland College.

Jalen Stenson was the male recipient of the United States Army Scholar Athlete Award. Stenson earned five varsity letters (two in football, two in basketball, one in golf) and recorded a 3.95 GPA.

Jared Syverson was given the Peter Chouinard Memoral Award, which is given annually to a senior wrestler who demonstrates hard work.

Jensen also earned the David Stade Memorial Award for the top senior golfer. Jacob Cronick was awarded the Brian Butler Award for the top senior football player.

The Robert Young “Heart Award” went to Cole Nivison. The Buchmiller Memoral Award and Scholarship was given to Mikayla Depuydt.

The 2014 Irving C. Houle Track Award went to Riley Ballard and Chris Sedenquist. Summer Demeuse was awarded the 2014 Chelsea Hewitt Memoral Award and the 2014 Teresa Pouliot Memorial Award and Scholarship. Peter Weyers was given the Norman Peterson Memorial Award and Scholarship.
