Heller, Cook selected as top Eskymo athletes
ESCANABA – Escanaba High school seniors Travis Heller and Ashley Cook have a combined 15 varsity letters between them and were recognized Wednesday as the winners of the annual Pfotenhauer-Gessner award, given to the top senior male and female athletes at Escanaba.
Heller has numerous letters in wrestling, baseball and tennis and was All-Great Northern Conference, All-U.P. and All-State in wrestling, where he finished third in the state in his weight class at the U.P. Finals in 2014.
Cook holds three letters in softball where she was named all-region her junior and senior years, two letters in basketball where she was an All-Great Northern Conference honorable mention and two volleyball letters where she was named all-region and All-U.P.
Syd Gafner and Cameron Beversluis were named the top female and male academic winners. Gafner has a GPA of 4.12 and had seven varsity letters in softball, basketball and volleyball. She will attend the University of Michigan in the fall.
Beversluis has a GPA of 4.01 and has varsity letters in football, baseball and tennis.
The Abrahamson award is given to the senior male and female with the most varsity letters. Aubrey Peterson and Steve Wood were the recipients. Peterson has 11 letters (four in track, four in cross country and three in wrestling, as team manager) and Wood has 10 varsity letters (four in hockey, two in football and four in tennis.)
