Jerome ‘Jerry’ G. Johnson
WATSON – Jerome “Jerry” G. Johnson, 72, of Watson, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014, at Marquette General Hospital.
Jerry was born Aug. 14, 1941, in Escanaba, the son of George and Dora (Marttila) Johnson. He was raised in Watson and was a 1958 graduate of Gwinn High School. Following high school, Jerry attended Northern Michigan University, for one year, before enrolling and graduating from General Motors Technical College. In 1962, Jerry was united in marriage to the former Anna Marie Kramer. Together the couple made their home and raised their three children, in Watson. In 1979, Jerry was united in marriage to the former Joan Winters. Throughout his life, Jerry was employed as a mill wright. In addition, he worked at Pisces Fish Machine Company where he was fortunate to have traveled for business to several countries throughout the world. He later went on to own and operate “Creative Wood Products,” which manufactured gun stocks, before taking over his father’s sawmill, “Johnson Cedar Products”, until his retirement. During his retirement years, Jerry was proud to have farmed his grandfather’s homestead, in Watson, with his prized herd of Belgian draft horses.
Jerry was a longtime member of the Watson Bible Chapel. Jerry was a dedicated member of A.A. His sobriety of more than 25 years allowed him to serve as an active member at the local, district and area levels. Jerry was secretary of Wells Township School Board, for many years. He was also instrumental in building the Wells Township park and swimming pool and served for the Wells Township Volunteer Fire Department. Jerry enjoyed watching sports while spending time with his four dogs. He will be deeply missed.
In addition to his loving mother, Dora, Jerry is survived by: son, Christopher Johnson of East Pointe, Mich.: daughters, Joelle (Bill) Schram of Rapid River, Mich., and Corinne (Bill) Cramer of Wilson, Mich.; sister, Jan (Tom) Korntved of Menominee, Mich.; grandchildren, Tony and Teresa Labadie and Teddy and Addie Schram; sister-in- law, Alice Johnson of Escanaba, Mich. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Jerry was preceded in death by his father, George; brother, Ron Johnson; special grandparents, Victor and Ida Johnson.
Jerry’s family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Funeral services to celebrate the life of Jerry G. Johnson will follow visiting hours, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Watson Bible Chapel with Pastor Bill Hill officiating.
Luncheon will follow funeral services. Jerry’s family respectfully requests that family and friends refrain from sending floral arrangements. Jerry will be laid to rest in the Forest Home Cemetery in Watson. The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Johnson family with arrangements.
