High schoolers to carry names of Michigan WWII vets to Normandy
STEVENSVILLE, Mich. – A total of 180 members of the Lakeshore High School band will leave home in Stevensville and hop on a plane for France. They have been invited to play in the D-Day 70th Anniversary Show in Normandy with eight performances in Normandy over a course of six days. The ultimate performance will be at a special D-Day show today.
Band members will be wearing 1,400 ribbons to honor Michigan veterans who fought in World War II. One will be wearing a ribbon to honor Harvey Arkens of Bark River.
The band members have brought along Michigan sand to pour on the grave sites of the 700 Michigan soldiers who died in the war.
When they return, the band members will send the 1,400 ribbons they wore to each of the veterans represented.
